Last week I asked how often you would enjoy receiving fiction from me. Based on responses I’ve decided to turn my Tuesday into 200sday. A 200 word short story every Tuesday. My long form story will continue on Friday and on Saturday’s I’ll send out a digest of my fiction that I’ve posted in Notes in case you miss anything.
Enjoy your first 200sday fiction.
The Bridge to Adulthood
It was a bridge to freedom — or so it felt. Childhood was like that. A trip to a small forest clearing became a portal where imagination could run wild.
Was it a small cottage where a witch might attack? A playground just beyond the schoolyard? Or maybe a wonderland, ruled by a queen whose underlings obeyed her every command.
Every day, it was something different.
Sam and Katie spent all their summer days there — day after day of make-believe. One day he was the king, the next she was the queen. Always equal turns.
But all things make-believe must come to an end. The days turned colder, and the school year began.
Gone were the days of kings and queens. Now it was gaggles of giggling girls and boys pretending to be too cool to notice.
The year was divided into quarters, and by the second quarter, kids began to pair off.
Katie and Sam, who had exchanged shy glances and blushes for months, were finally making eye contact. Katie would offer a smile and a wave; Sam responded with a cool-guy nod. They met in the middle of the hall.
Childhood had ended. Adulthood was beginning.
Subscribe to get three days of fiction. Tuesdays - a bite sized 200 word story. Fridays - a longer piece or the next installment in an ongoing serial and Saturdays - a digest of daily flash fiction from my Notes section.
