“Midnight”
A loud crash. Jennifer rolled over in bed and looked at her clock; it was close to midnight. In the old days, a crash at midnight would have been of grave concern, but since Mando and Motron, her two tabbies, this was a common practice.
Both of her cats were curious. Mando more so. But they loved to explore their new environment and interact with pretty much everything they could touch.
The duo were constantly up to something. She wasn’t sure what they had knocked over or gotten into this time, but she was certain it could wait till morning.
“Collar”
If you tried to pet Mando or Motron by going over their heads, they both reared back. Trying to put anything near or over their heads was an absolute no.
Jennifer was just glad she’d decided they were only indoor cats because she had never collared them. Maybe if she had done it at a very young age, it wouldn’t have bothered them so much, but now at four, they were stubborn.
Though that wasn’t what Jennifer had in mind. She’d hoped her cats would be cats she could dress up and take pictures of, but that was a no.
“Perch”
Motron and Mando both had their perches.
Since Motron was chubby at 16 pounds, his were closer to the ground. He liked to sit on the solid cardboard box that Mama and Papa had covered with a TARDIS blanket. Sunbathing by the back window while lying on it might be his favorite thing to do. He also enjoyed the ottoman.
Mando enjoyed being up high. He would jump on top of the hutch. Much higher. He’d roll over and let his head hang upside down. Other times you’d find him curled up on the cat tree or on the fridge.
“Window”
Cat T.V. — that’s what it was called. The beautiful backyard through the glass or screen door that the cats could look out on. They would spend hours watching for the chipmunks and listening to the chirping of the birds, their tails swishing in anticipation.
The yard kept their rapt attention; it was one of the few things that would keep Motron away from the food bowl, he would be so enraptured.
Cat T.V. was the best, until one of them got too excited and clawed into the screen door and would accidentally open it. They then lost their T.V. privileges.
“Groom”
Cats spend a lot of time grooming themselves. In the beginning, this was a bit bothersome to Jennifer, the way the cats would be walking then suddenly have a leg in the air and lick themselves. It was almost obscene in a way.
Over time, it became part of life. She didn’t really think much of it. It was just something they did. But when her family came over, they were always commenting on it.
Jennifer would laugh and say, “That’s how cats are. You get used to it.”
And she knew, just as she had, they would soon enough.
“Flick”
Mando was an incredibly playful cat. He could turn anything into a game. He pulled the leftover toilet paper rolls out of the trash, and then, when someone was in the bathroom, he’d bat at them under the door until you flicked them back towards him, and like in tennis, he’d send them back at you, his tiny paw appearing under the door.
He would chase after bottle caps, play with plastic bags, sit in cardboard boxes, and try to tear up papers. Tearing up papers was his new favorite activity. Mando was never short of finding ways to play.
