Title: Mando and His Plushie
Mando was a cat on the move. Through the condo he went, his favorite toy hanging from his mouth. As he moved, he cried as though announcing, “Hey, look, I have my favorite toy!”
Sometimes he would drop the toy and bat it around a bit, or he’d leave it alone for a few minutes, but he always came back for the green plushie.
He had other toys to play with, but he always returned to this one. So it wasn’t surprising when his owners found him curled up on the couch, taking a nap, the favorite toy beside him.
Title: Purr Machine
Mando was clearly Mark’s cat. As soon as Mark walked through the door, the cat trailed after him until he finally sat down. Sometimes Mando even jumped up and pressed his paws against his leg, as if trying to push him into the chair.
Once he was seated, the cat hopped onto his chest and made himself comfortable.
“How’s my sweet kitty?” Mark asked, and the feline responded with a deep, rumbling purr.
Jennifer could hear it from across the room. Mando rarely purred like that for her, but when it came to Mark, he turned into a purr machine.
Title: It’s Just a Scratch
Mark couldn’t resist Motron’s soft underbelly. He had to pet it every once in a while. Usually, he could get away with it for a second or two — sometimes a little longer if Motron was in the right mood — but it often ended with a scratch or a nip.
Mark considered it worthwhile, payment for the chance to rub that soft, furry spot. He didn’t do it often; he didn’t want to agitate or upset his cat. Still, that fluffy belly was hard to resist.
Motron was formidable. Their little sour patch: first he was sweet, then he was sour.
Title: How Not To Train Your Kittens
Jennifer heard Motron’s sad, pathetic whine from across the room.
“What’s up, Motron?” she called.
She heard the sound of little feet rushing over. He sat down next to her and waited expectantly. This had become their ritual.
When Motron wanted treats, he whined. Jennifer would call to him, and he’d come and sit patiently at her feet, waiting for the reward.
“Mando,” she called next. Might as well give both cats a treat. Mando appeared, and she tossed a couple of treats to each of them.
She sighed. She hadn’t meant to train this particular trick into her cats.
Title: No One Likes the Litter Box
The worst part about owning a cat was the litter box. Mark and Jennifer tried to trade off days cleaning it out so neither got stuck doing it all the time.
But Jennifer had injured her knee last year, had surgery on it in November, and still hadn’t recovered, making it difficult to help with the litter box — or really anything.
Mark was responsible for so much now, including almost daily cleaning of the litter box.
Jennifer didn’t know when she’d be able to go back to cleaning it out, but she intended to pay Mark back. He deserved it.
Title: Like They Have Always Been There
Melody had gotten used to it. Motron would jump on the headrest behind her. The first time he’d done it; she’d screamed and jumped out of her chair — she’d been so shocked. He’d just looked at her in bewilderment.
Over time, it had become common practice, and now sometimes she didn’t notice he was there until his tail flopped onto her shoulder or hit her in the face. He was hard to ignore then.
She’d scooch around slightly and give him a few pets; sometimes she’d offer a treat. Her cats could still surprise her, but some things were commonplace
